Meat Packaging: More Than Just Wrapping the Meat Up

2026-09-15

How can chilled meat keep its appearance? How can braised and cooked foods extend their shelf life? How can fresh-food e-commerce reduce pouch breakage? These challenges are unavoidable in meat Packaging, and they shape how every cut of meat finally performs on the shelf. On September 12, 2026, the 24th China International Meat Industry Exhibition opened at Qingdao International Expo Center (Hongdao). HySum attended with vacuum pouches, stretch-forming film and skin packaging film, connecting with end meat brands through physical samples.

This year's exhibition was themed "Empowering Industry Development, Promoting Meat Consumption", focusing on technology, green development, quality and branding. At the show, HySum broke down, one by one, the packaging challenges the industry faces in scenarios such as chilled meat, braised foods and e-commerce.

Chilled Meat, Cooked Foods, E-Commerce: The Challenges Differ

The toughest test for chilled meat comes at the shelf: moisture loss and darkening, or blood water seeping out, all directly affect its appearance. For chilled cuts, the most common practice is vacuum packaging with a vacuum pouch; for tray-packed products, skin Packaging Film clings tightly to the surface, bringing out the meat's natural color. Bone-in products, however, risk the bone piercing the packaging — once air leaks in, all the earlier effort is wasted.

Braised and cooked foods face a different set of problems: oil seepage, oxidative discoloration and flavor loss. They must also withstand boiling and retorting, and a higher barrier level is often needed to support a longer shelf life.

Stretch-forming film mainly serves thermoforming packaging, in which the product is formed and sealed directly on the packaging machine. What users care about most is whether it runs smoothly — if it does not, efficiency drops. For companies in fresh-food e-commerce or small and medium-sized brands, the minimum order quantity and the overall cost are two more items to calculate.

The Industry Is Changing, and So Are the Demands on Meat Packaging

Categories such as prepared dishes and chilled meat keep expanding, and with them the requirements for freshness retention, shelf life and appearance keep rising. As plastic restrictions tighten, recyclable and mono-material structures have become a shared direction for the packaging industry, and products exported to Europe and North America face additional environmental thresholds.

Packaging is no longer just about wrapping the meat up — it is part of a product's positioning: gift packaging needs a long shelf life, export packaging needs compliance, e-commerce packaging needs cost control, and one company often has several of these needs at the same time.

HySum has accumulated years of experience in functional films and can provide specific combination solutions for different scenarios and different order volumes.
